Kuala Lumpur, 2016 – A firm believer in life-long learning and the importance of interior design, Mah Sing Group is pleased to be the first property developer to sponsor this year’s Interior Design Students’ Saturday 2016 themed IDMOJI. A total of 53 cash prizes worth RM15,000 were given out to the winners.

The event which took place at KL Library and Menara DBKL aimed to empower the young creative minds of Interior Design students.

This annual event has gathered the largest number of participating institutions to date, 19 public and private higher institutions, with a grand total of over 800 participants nationwide. These participants compete in 11 categories ranging from conceptual designs and drawing, creative furniture and lighting production, recycle-material creations, innovative fashion design and games. Some of the projects were created beforehand and were submitted on the day, with many of the projects were put together on the day itself. Participants had the opportunity to enjoyed light-hearted competition with their peers as well as gaining industry knowledge and personal networking.

Promoting Healthy Competition amongst Youth

Ms Lyanna Tew, Senior General Manager for Corporate Communications said, “Mah Sing view this event as a great opportunity to engage with future interior designers of the nation. Further to this, we also support education initiatives by Teach for Malaysia,

Dignity for Children Foundation. At Mah Sing, we are a big fan of learning. In 2015 alone, we invested more than 27,000 training hours for our employees.”

Datuk Eric Chong, Founder of Erican College stated, “I strongly felt it was high time for these future industry professionals to show what the next big innovations for the future of Interior Design could be. This was their big chance to shine…and they did it brilliantly.”

Datuk Eric Chong further added, “The participants had good spirits and remained courteous towards their fellow competitors. There was a team which did not bring enough tools, yet other teams offered their tools to them. This is the sort of healthy competition we emphasize.”

Every year, one higher education institution will claim the honour to host this event. Known for its outstanding Interior Design and Graphic Design courses in the region, Erican College was proud to take the baton this year to host this annual event in conjunction of KL Design Week and with the theme ‘IDMOJI:25’.

MIID vice president Ooi Boon Seong said the competition exposed students to what an interior designer does. “Many people think that interior design is just decorating a space but it is actually a highly specialized profession that involves architecture, structural changes and other factors to create space using good designs. Through the competition, participants learned to work with people to create quality projects in a short duration of time,” he said.

The IDMOJI:25

The theme chosen for this year was “IDMOJI:25”. The word ‘emoji’ is Japanese in origin and bears a strong resemblance to the English word ‘emotion’. It was the fervent hope of the organisers that by making emoji the theme for the various designs, it would create an appreciation and affection for universal love and understanding.
This annual event was organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers, alongside their corporate partner Dulux. The two organisers went on record, saying that their intent was to facilitate the sharing of thoughts and exchange of ideas via intense discussion and execution of various assignments within a set period of time.
